It's the biggest event of the year in Hollywood so it's only natural that stars would go to great lengths to look the part.
And although this year's Oscars saw some of the most beautiful gowns in the world grace the red carpet, others failed to make the grade.
Anne-Sophie Bion wore an unfortunate black creation that was more bin liner than elegant evening dress.
Anne-Sophie Bion wore an unfortunate black creation that was more bin liner than elegant evening dress, left, while Virginia Madsen's
Kevan Hall dress looked more Quality Street than Rodeo Drive and Viola Davis, right, had too much going on in Vera Wang
But considering the French film editor was invited to the event for her work on The Artist - the winner of five awards last night - it's unlikely she was too concerned with her outfit.
She was joined on the red carpet by Virginia Madsen, better known in her 80's heydey.
And it seems the actress's dress-sense is also stuck in the same decade. Virginia wore a bright purple Kevin Hall dress that did nothing for her - but at 50,still looked age-defyingly good.
You know it's bad when...Busy Phillips took a leaf out of Sharon Osbourne's book in D&G, pictured with daughter Kelly two years ago
The Help star Viola David divided critics with her Vera Wang gown.
Although the colour and silhouette suited her figure, the combination of asymmetric pleats, beads and revealing cleavage proved that more is rarely more.
A more simple version of the same dress would have been had a more flattering effect.
Anna Faris' sequin Diane von Furstenberg dress did nothing for her while Sandra Bullock's Marchesa dress was too severe and Melissa Leo's Reem Accra gown was ill-fitting
Actress Busy Phillips will no doubt be mortified today when she learns her D&G dress was worn by Sharon Osbourne, two years ago.
The strapless dress was badly accessorized and did little to flatter her hourglass curves.
Other stars that failed to make the grade were Anna Faris in a Diane Von Furstenberg sequin gown and last year's Oscar winner Melissa Leo, who wore ill-fitting Reem Accra.
Berenice Bejo's Ellie Saab dress bordered on frumpy, left, and Missy Pyle, right, who wore Valentina Delfino, was a washout in turquoise
Sandra Bullock's Marchesa monochrome was beautiful but too severe for the 47-year-old.
Despite the refreshing pop of colour, Berenice Bejo's Elie Saab dress was forgettable and bordering on frump
y. Missy Pyle's Valentina Delfino looked to be inspired by Mailbu Barbie.
The event's younger stars Shailene Woodley, 20, in Valentino and Sarah Hyland, 21, in Alberta Ferretti, looked pretty but dressed too-old for their age.
